Country Cottages And Devon’s Beaches
If you’d like a quintessentially English holiday this year, why not have a look at country cottages? Britain has some beautiful areas to explore on family holidays, and if you’d like to experience some of the best beaches in the country, country cottages in the South West of England will be just right for you.
In the North of Devon you’ll find fine-sand beaches that are very popular with surfers and sandcastle-builders alike, and lots of country cottages to holiday in.
The best-known surfing beach in Devon is probably Croyde. It’s positioning of due west-facing means it picks up a lot of swell, and even if you’d never be tempted to surf yourself, there is great entertainment value in watching the pros and novices alike riding the waves.
Croyde has excellent sand dunes and a lovely stretch of sand but can become crowded in the peak season; it’s situated at a resort village and so if you’d prefer a beach where you can have your own space, head to Instow beach, which has extensive sands.
This beach doesn’t face into the Atlantic, which means there are no huge surf waves. Instead it is a good place to see windsurfing and boats being launched. It has soft, fine sand and you can look out across the waters and see Appledore, a picturesque little village which you can reach regularly by ferry from Instow.
The small sand-and-shingle cove called Hele Bay is quaint and ideal for families. At low tide, hundreds of rockpools emerge from the water and provide hours of fascination for children looking for sea life. Hele Bay is just next to Hillsborough Nature Reserve, which is an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and the beach itself has the Blue Flag award due to the safety and cleanliness of the water there.
The area Torbay, the beaches that back onto Torquay, Paignton and Brixham, and is often referred to as the ‘English Riviera’ for its outstanding beauty.
Torre Abbey Sands has very shallow water, making it ideal for families with small children. The beach itself is sandy, and there are amenities such as restaurants, cafes and hotels nearby. Dogs are banned from this beach however, so if you’ve brought your pooch on holiday with you, you’ll have to leave him in the cottage for this beach.
Country cottages provide excellent bases to relax in after a hard day’s beach play. What better way to spend an evening after being sun and sea drenched than in a lovely quaint cottage overlooking the sea?
